What are fat dissolving injections?

Intralipotherapy or fat dissolving injections are a non-surgical body contouring solution to minimise and remove stubborn localised pockets of fat. It is ideal for those who exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet but have pockets of fat that won’t shift, even with a focused exercise. The active ingredient is deoxycholic acid which is an FDA approved ingredient to break down fat cells. It is a bile acid which emulsifies and solubilises dietary fats in the intestine, and when injected subcutaneously, it disrupts cell membranes in adipocytes and destroys fat cells in that tissue making it the perfect agent to remove stubborn pockets of fat such as a double chin which can be treated in as little as 2 sessions 4 weeks apart. Destroying the fat cells is a long-term solution provided you retain a stable weight, eat healthily and continue exercise as usual. Important: Clients must be within one stone of their recommended body weight to have treatment and be able to pinch about 3cm of fat.

What can I expect during the treatment?

As with all treatments that involve needles, the injections may be uncomfortable for a few seconds. We also always offer the option of applying a topical numbing agent to the treatment area to minimise discomfort. After numbing cream is applied and the skin is cleaned to minimise the risk of infection we inject the product to the targeted areas using small needles. Immediately after treatment you may appear red and swollen due to the inflammatory reaction in the fat cells which can be apparent for 3-5 days. Therefore, if you intend to have a facial treatment, e.g. double chin where the swelling may be obvious, you may wish to organise time away from work or social engagements.

You will be able to reduce the swelling by using a cool pack wrapped in a clean cloth for a maximum of 20 minutes each day.  You cannot use anti-inflammatory tablets for 48 hours after treatment as this will work against the treatment. The treated area may feel tender and firm for up to 8 weeks post treatment.

During recovery we recommend that you avoid:

• Swimming pools, spas and saunas for 3 days.
• Physical exercise for 10 days.
• Any other aesthetic treatments for 2 weeks.

Are there any side effects of fat dissolving injections?

Temporary side effects include bruising, swelling, redness and irritation in the injection area. Sometimes it may feel slightly tender to touch, numb, or itchy but these side effects usually reside after 3-5 days. Some lumpiness may occur (not usually visible to others) but this settles with time over a few weeks.

What are the risks?

DesoBody®, DesoFace® and Aqualyx® are the products we use at Emerald Aesthetics for intralipotherapy. Both have a good safety profile with FDA and CE approval. However you can minimise risk by going to a practitioner who is skilled at delivering the treatment. Injections may only be administered subcutaneously, avoiding muscular or dermal tissue.
