The pain threshold of individuals varies and it also depends on what treatment and area you are having done. However we offer a topical numbing agent prior to treatment, we also have a vibrating distraction device which can be placed under the chin, this can be effective for some people! For dermal fillers we use EMLA 5% which is effective at minimising pain. In addition the fillers tend to contain lidocaine which is a local anaesthetic that also assists in numbing the tissue during injections.
The most common type of facial fillers and certainly the ones we use, are made up of a stable form of hyaluronic acid (HA) – a natural component of your body’s connective tissue that maintains skin’s strength and elasticity. As we age however, the natural HA levels in our skin decrease. When injected as a dermal filler it helps to restore lost volume in the superficial and deep fat pads of the face, provide shape and even out depressions in the skin and provide hydration. You can have dermal fillers in different parts of your face and body. The most common areas are lips, tear trough, cheeks, mouth and jawline, as well as hands, neck and décolletage.
Dermal fillers are not a one size fits all, they have different characteristics that we utilise for your budget, specific areas and concerns you want to treat and how long you want the dermal filler to last. At Emerald aesthetics we use a range of non-permanent HA fillers typically;
Juvaderm Ultra 3 – We use this fully reversible FDA approved product for adding volume, hydration and definition in the lips with optimum results lasting up to 6-9 months
Revolax Deep – A similar product to Juvaderm 3 but more affordable.
Resylane Lyft – We use this fully reversible FDA approved product for contouring and restoring lost volume to the cheeks, chin and jawline for a gentle lifting effect and restoring a more youthful look.

Probably the most obvious difference between a needle and a cannula is that the tip of a needle is sharp while a cannula is blunt. One of the main issues when using a needle to administer dermal filler is the likelihood of swelling and bruising post-treatment. Once the needle is inserted, there is a chance that it will pierce the blood vessels underneath the skin, resulting in a bruise. While we can take various measures and use our knowledge of facial anatomy to minimise the risk of bruising, even the most experienced of practitioners can’t guarantee that a patient definitely won’t bruise. In contrast, a cannula does not pose the same risks due to its blunt tip. While a small bore needle is used to make the initial entry point, once the cannula is inserted into the skin, it is far less likely to pierce and pass through the blood vessels. Instead, it simply pushes past the vessels, causing less trauma underneath the skin and therefore, less chance of bruising post treatment. Another risk relating to the sharp tip of the needle is not just piercing the blood vessel but actually injecting the filler into it, leading to a vascular occlusion which, in turn can result in far more serious complications. Again, there are certain measures that practitioners take to ensure that this doesn’t happen, however, it is something that must be considered when using a needle. The risk of a vascular occlusion is one of the reasons why many practitioners prefer to use a cannula in “high-risk” areas such as around the eye, as, unlike a needle, a cannula won’t pierce any blood vessels in the area and is therefore less likely to cause any severe complications. Another major difference between needles and cannulas is that a cannula is generally significantly longer than a needle, and it’s more flexible. Its length and flexibility mean that a cannula allows for smoother, continuous delivery of filler, in areas such as the jawline. It can also be a good solution for patients who are nervous about needles, as far fewer injections are required. A cannula will generally only require a small number of insertion points as it can reach a lot further, which can also mean that the overall treatment is less painful. In areas that require more control and precision such as the lips and smokers lines we opt for a needle.
It can depend on a number of things; largely on how your body breaks it down naturally over time, lifestyle, sun exposure and which HA product is used is used, but most dermal fillers will last between six to 18 months.
All the filler products we use at Emerald aesthetics are made up of Hyaluronic Acid which means they are FULLY REVERSABLE with the enzyme Hyalase from the time they are administered, until the time they are reabsorbed. So even in the unlikely event, you didn’t like the results, we can reverse them in seconds.

We will thoroughly clean the area to be treated but ideally wear little or no make-up for any treatment you are having. For injectables, microneedling and dermaplaning IF OKAYED BY YOUR GP avoid any blood thinning medications such as aspirin, Ibuprofen and some herbal preparations such as Vitamin, Gingko Biloba and St John’s Wart. Also avoid alcohol 24 hours prior and be well hydrated. Under no circumstances will anybody be treated under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Yes, we take a £30 deposit to secure all bookings this is deducted off the final cost of your treatment but non-refundable if notification of a cancellation is made outside of the 24 hour window. You can pay your deposit via the online booking system.
We work closely with Pretty Face Finance who can assist you with your non-surgical cosmetic journey by allowing you to affordably spread the cost, over an achievable timescale convenient to yourself. Please make sure you have childcare in place for your appointment. Due to the nature of the equipment in the salon sharps, medicines etc it is unsafe for children to be allowed in the treatment room and we are therefore not insured for unattended children while you are having your procedure.
Sorry we do not offer home visits however we run clinics from a number of locations around the north east including Prism Laser Specialists in Sunderland and RyTAN in Ryton village in Gateshead. We are open to running clinics in other suitable salons in cities around the UK.
